GREEN4SEA Ballast Water Masterclass was successfully conducted on the 16th of December 2015 in Eugenides foundation, in Athens, where, more than 500 representatives of 220 organizations joined. The event was organized by Green4sea and ERMA FIRST participated as a lead sponsor.
The speakers’ panel consisted of 12 experts who presented the latest updates regarding BWM, BWM Convention and implementation and feedback.
Among others ERMA FIRST’s experienced staff were also parts of the panel. Mrs. Efi Tsolaki, chief scientific officer and responsible for the ongoing USCG Type Approval process talked about BW Sampling challenges and best practices, where the participants had the chance to express their questions and interest in the matter, having an expert beside them. Mr. Konstantinos Dimopoulos, Technical Marketing Executive of ERMA FIRST presented the BW Filtration Challenges and Best Practices, pointing out the necessity of filters application in BWTS. Another speaker, Mr. Nikos Kyritsis analyzed the challenges and lessons learned from BWTS Installation and Operation according to our experience, explaining that the successful BWTS operation depends on correct system installation, commissioning and human factor. Also, he explained the importance of having training material and seminars for the crew so as to familiarize with the system’s operation and requirements.
Last but not least, Mr. Konstantinos Stampedakis, ERMA FIRST’s General Director, talked about BWT using fresh water, explaining how the completely different biology between fresh and sea water makes the efficacy testing of all BWTS compulsory.
In conclusion, the purpose of the masterclass was to increase BW awareness and assist ship-owners/ operators to take the right and conscious decisions concerning BWTS installation onboard their vessels.
